“The one year anniversary of my grandmother’s passing is coming up and my grandpa is having a rough time of it. They were married for 65 years and were the most perfectly matched, fiercely in love couple I’ve ever seen and I know he misses her every minute of the day. He’s a retired Marine who served in WWII as well as the Korean War and is legitimately a hero (to our country as well as to me) but not having his partner in adventure by his side has him feeling isolated and down. Grandpa is quite a reader and loves receiving mail so I’m hoping letters will help him realize that he is still vitally important and loved. Thank you so much!”

“In 2012, my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. He has been undergoing chemo treatments on a bi-weekly basis. He is a strong guy. He used to run marathons, bike daily, and work hard to serve our county. However, he is getting tired of the chemo treatments. Sometimes, he feels worn out and completely wasted. We give him all the encouragement and support we can (in the form of words and love letters) but I really believe that love letters from others will encourage him, uplift him, and give him the strength to continue with the chemo treatments with a strong spirit.”

Today we’re determined to shower some love letters on Gracie. Gracie’s sister writes, “My younger sister, Gracie, is a freshman in high school and has dealt with a lot lately. All of her friends seem to have turned their backs on her and she feels like she’s hated by everyone. On top of that, she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the beginning of this year. She’s had a difficult time accepting the fact that she has to deal with diabetes for the rest of her life. The past month or two she’s been really depressed and could use some cheering up. She’s such a strong girl and I know she can get through anything. I just want her to realize how many people really do care about her and want her to keep fighting.”

We’ve been some kind of anxious to get these requests into your hands. We know you’ve got tons + tons of love and encouragement that you will be absolutely pouring into these letters. So have at them!

This month we are focusing in on our theme of “P.S. Stand a Little Taller.” We’ve chosen recipients of love letter bundles who could use a boost, a smile, and just some general love to push them upward and help them to keep fighting onward.

The following letter requests were requested by close friends + family of the recipients:

MEET CONNIE

“Connie is a really lovely person who tends to feel the sadnesses of life in an acute way. She is a junior in college and struggling to find her place in the world and to find a way to lead a happy life. Her father died unexpectedly a few years ago and she has handled this loss with grace and determination. This semester most of her close friends are studying abroad, leaving her all alone on campus. She has a great appreciation and fondness for songs and poetry and I think a love letter telling her that she’s heading in the right direction and will find the fulfillment she seeks would really make her day.”

MEET RACHEL

“My dear friend, Rachel, unexpectedly lost her husband last year. They had only been married 11 months. Life has obviously been hard for her since his passing, and she had an enormous outpouring of love after he died, but the letters start to trickle off after the first month or two. I know that she would love to get some love and encouragement in the mail. We are both finishing our 4th year of medical school and we try to write each other letters as often as possible because we love some good ol’ fashioned snail mail!”

MEET MELANIE

“My mom is going through a really rought time right now. She has been batteling serious depression for my whole life. She is a teacher, and her students just love her and she puts everything she has to being a teacher. But she is constantly being undervalued and underappreciated. She wants to change her job and start a doggie day care and bake organic pet treats. But she lacks the support and courage to make such a huge step and I can only help her so much and she is the most amazing mom and all I want is for her to be happy again.”

MARCH 7, 2013. HONOLULU, HAWAII.

At the library in search of the book True Believer by Nicholas Sparks, my sister found a little enveloped stashed between the pages. We both opened it up to a card and read it in the aisle surrounded by millions of books. It was the sweetest thing to read. It made my month after struggling so much with my own personal issues. whoever you are, thank you. you gave me the courage to just keep going.

MARCH 7, 2013. SHARON, MA.

This morning our reference librarian found this letter on a table in the Young Adult section. Many people think librarians sit around reading books all day, but we do much, much more and get caught in the daily grind the same as any other job. Finding this note was a sweet reminder that we need to look around every now and then to remind ourselves that we have so much to share with our community. We plan on putting the note back in the YA section with the hope it will brighten the day for the library patron who finds it.

MARCH 4, 2013. NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA.

So I was at a used bookstore in North Hollywood and was just leaving and stopped to look at the ads and stuff posted on the pinboard and I saw this orange evnvelope just laying there. I thought maybe someone forgot their bday card. So I picked and it said it was for me! Yes, me! And so I opened it and it had an insert from Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll and a little envelope with flowers seeds in it to plant with instructions. My reaction to this was complete joy. It was perfect and I felt so lucky. The message of the card was at the perfect time because I really needed to hear that. I cannot thank whoever left this beautiful little gift.

MARCH 4, 2013. DREXEL UNIVERSITY

I’m a student at Drexel University, and on March 4th I found a letter in my residence hall stairwell. It was filled with inspiring, wonderful quotes, and it came at such a good time-

This past weekend, two students of Drexel University were found dead, and one of them was a friend and classmate of mine. Finding this brought a smile to my face.

MARCH 2, 2013. MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE

Hi!

I was having a down day and swallowed up in mid-term stress when I found this letter. I saw the corner of an envelope sticking out from between the cushions of the library chair I was curled up in studying. I pulled it out, thinking it must have been lost or left behind, and found this note:

Dear beautiful stranger,

This is for you! You may or may not be having a nice day. Regardless, you are beautiful, smart, daring, and so much more. “To love yourself is to begin a lifelong romance” – Oscar Wilde. I hope this brightens your day!

MARCH 1, 2013. OAK RIDGE, TN.

The note was on the treadmill at the gym where I go a few days a week
to help save my sanity. Hmm, do I open the envelope, or is it for
someone else? Finally giving in to curiosity, I pried up the flap and
peeked inside. It was a lovely random-act-of-kindness message of
validation. I had to stifle my tears so that I wouldn’t snot all over
the equipment. The note came at a time when I really needed some love.
I’ve been struggling for months to find a job, my husband recently
filed for divorce, my friends and family are far away, and I am
worried about many things including a large chunk of student loan
debt, my aging vehicle, and the ability to care for my critter
companions. It’s so nice to receive some positive vibes. Thank you,
“sloppy pen pal” friend.

FEBRUARY 26, 2013. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON.

Found this gem outside a lecture hall at the University of Oregon. Really brightened my day!

FEBRUARY 24, 2013. LONDON, ENGLAND.

So my family and I were on vacation in London, I’ll be honest I had a pretty bad morning and was feeling really bad about my self. We were walking past a gift shop and my mom stopped to look at postcards, when I noticed a letter.

I smiled so hard, I felt so touched, I knew it was meant for me, even if the person who wrote it didn’t mean it for me fate had brought me there that day, I knew that I was where I was supposed to be, and ultimately I’m on the right track. Even though my selfish heart told me to take the note and save it, I left it there, so hopefully whoever passes by will take a glance and feel just that much better about life.

FEBRUARY 24, 2013. AUKLAND, NEW ZEALAND.

I had been having a rather bad day, after waking up with a hangover and grumpy parents, when I found a letter from a stranger in the Auckland Art Gallery, wedged between two books. It instantly made my day better, and inspired me to do the same for a stranger.

“If you have found me- I’M YOURS!”

“Life doesn’t always serve out what we want. I didn’t make the shortlist for a job I desperately wanted. 100 applicants. Argh! But it is a beautiful day, the sun is shining, people are smiling, and I have a great evening ahead. Whoever you are, take a moment now (right now) and look around. What beauty do you see? What/who is the magic in your life? Remember you are loved.

She just lost her job and is struggling trying to find a new job.” Times are tight so her friend has been helping with some of the bills. ” I have been giving her kind words but I think she needs a random letter or two.” Josephine just celebrated a birthday in January so be sure to pour some extra love out on her!

LETTER REQUEST #2

We’ve all been there– a broken heart and a pillowcase sopping with tears. A close friend requested this love letter bundle for Mackenzie writing, “Mackenzie is a freshman in college and is the sweetest girl I know. She had her heart completely broken by her boyfriend in her senior year. She still calls me crying because she misses him and still loves him and doesn’t know where the relationship went wrong. I just want her to see there are so many other people in the world who would just love to love her.” Mackenzie is clearly a smart, beautiful girl who deserves a little piece of happiness… We are ready to bless her with lots of love letters.

A friend across the pond requested this next bundle for a great girl named Jennifer. “Jen doesn’t realize how many people love her. She battles every single day with depression and anxiety and doesn’t realize just how special she is to people. I live in the UK and I want her to know that I love her and that I’m here for her no matter what.” Let’s let Jennifer see tonight that she is far from alone in all of this and help her friend from overseas send a massive bundle of letters her way.

We are ready to cake the love on thick for Anthony. Anthony’s fiance wrote in saying, “Anthony is the best person I have ever met. He is the sweetest person, and the most amazing fiancé. He will soon be a daddy to our first baby boy! And we could not be more excited.” Between money, moving, and feeling rushed in the whirlwind of it all, Anthony could benefit from some love and encouragement from all parts of the world.

I’ve been learning how to breathe again.

Sometimes I think we have to start over to get anywhere. And sometimes we have to really, really Start. Over. Like breathing.

If I hold the hand of some memory, some sorrow, some person…a madness will drift between my bones and drink me away until I am a slowly falling imprint left in the air. Letting go …is for me. I’ve been learning how to love.

Maybe for the first time ever. I hadn’t realized or grasped that I should be head over heels in love with myself before I tried loving anyone else. That memo never skimmed the top of my desk, or perhaps it did but it got buried under life’s many tasks and errands. I’ve been trying really hard on this one. Writing up my own rules as I go along, creating a manifesto of all the things that make me happy and make me the sum total in my life. The things that make me me.

I’ve been learning to forgive February.

She bustles in every year just when my muscles can’t stand the cold any longer. I know she means well, but her broad smile and flowing skirt always make me sad. She comes decorated in sunset colors and paper hearts. But I am fragile—too fragile to even look her in the eye. It was only recently that I realized I had manipulated the words she announced. I thought she said February is only for lovers. But really she said: she is for those in love. If you listen carefully, you can hear the wispy breath of a difference right between those words.

I am in love; in love with love and family and friends, neighbors, professors, advisors, co-workers, movies, books, writing, art—in love with people who have moved to other countries, but still have cozy spots in my heart. In love with peers who live down the street, who still smile and wave when our paths mingle. In love with my life, even the parts that make me work a little harder to smile every day. I try to celebrate love every day of my life, but in February I will climb to the roof of my house and I sing about it.

February is a loud drama queen, but she means well. Forgive her if she makes you sad. Celebrate alongside the people you do love. Celebrate the ability to love! To me, a life sealed with love means holding the people you love close, living a life you love, and giving back to the world. It’s making memories while enjoying the quality of time and not the quantity of time. It’s doing great work and being true to yourself by doing things that make you happy and help you grow. And it’s using your talents and sharing the love you’re given with everyone around you.

To me, living a life sealed with love means taking advantage of every moment, every day, and living it intentionally. Not sitting idly by and letting the world spin around, but rather opening my heart and appreciating everything it has to offer. A SEALED WITH LOVE LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER

Dearest MLL Community—

The U.S. Postal Service and More Love Letters share the same heartbeat; I’ve learned that to be true in the past 17 months of running this organization and working with all of you.

The committed workers at the U.S. Postal Service are always bringing people together with envelopes in the mailbox and packages at the doorstep. They’re tireless. They’re connectors. They’re dedicated. And not an ounce of the work we’ve done in the last year would be possible without them. Each one of nearly 11,000 love letters reached their recipients because of USPS and we never forget that.

This is one of many reasons for why we decided to work with the U.S. Postal Service this month and bring 14 days brimming with love and letters to all of you. We wanted a campaign that stretched beyond romance and valentines, and so we linked arms with USPS and created the Sealed with Love program. Check out all the goodness here.
